Whenever I see any of the installments of the STAR WARS franchise I am reminded of Peter Biskind's excellent book EASY RIDERS, RAGING BULLS. The two directors that Biskind singles out as assassins of the auteur sensibility that destroyed the studio system and subsequently saved Hollywood are George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. I saw the first STAR WARS film again this summer after many years and what struck me was its lock, stock and barrel embrace of militarism, something that was hard to do even in a Hollywood blockbuster coming so close on the heels of the U.S. defeat in Vietnam. ROGUE ONE is cookie cutter schlock. The final battle on the planet Scarif is decent. But this is a movie for children, or adults who want to see the same film over and over again.
