I LOVE Dean Koontz. Most especially the books where he includes animals, notably Golden Retrievers (as he has owned these dogs and shares an affinity with them). This book featured a golden and was really good - gripping, right from the start. It was right up there with the best of Dean Koontz... until they mention "the dream thing". . Once a story (book or movie) heads into the realm of "this isn't really happening" dream-type stuff, you've lost me. The dream-story paralleling the real story was still good, it was done well, but it just killed my enthusiasm dead. For me, if it's not really happening what's the point? Even though it's a just a story - if that makes sense. . So I sprinted through the first half, chewed through it with vigor, hit the "dream-stuff", and like a car hitting water I hit the brakes, swerved, despaired, swore, resigned myself to it, and made the stubborn looooong crawl to the end. Satisfied that I finished it. . Still a good read, glad I got to meet these characters.
