based on a 1780 Diderot novel which began as letters written as a practical joke he wanted to play on an ardently Catholic friend and which were later revised into a novel. despite the 'joke' it does reflect the fate of some young women at the hands of their families and the church. well played by Etienne, the young girl is subjected to comforting lies, sadistic punishment, and unwanted sexual advances from her church mothers as she makes every effort to renounce her vows and to be released from the suffocatingly cloistered life of the convent. beautifully filmed French period piece.
