This was satisfying on several different levels: - the mystery itself is well done; there's a seemingly straightforward, solved case that becomes more complex, leading to a bit of a twist and a satisfying conclusion. - the characters are three-dimensional and engaging, both those that recur in the series as well as those just in this book. Not just the human characters, either: the animal characters have depth and personality as well. I felt both happy and interested spending time with these characters. - the setting here plays a huge part, and Johnson paints these Wyoming towns in patient and loving detail. - finally, the writing is excellent. Johnson can certainly craft a sentence. The nicest thing is that all these elements feed into and off one another, so it feels very cohesive. Also, although this is the fifth book in the Walt Longmire series, it is the first that I have read, and it felt fine to jump into the middle of the series.
