While the first book set the tempo, the second book made it rise even higher. The book was a little more slow than the first, due to all the political intrigue going on. The plot thickens and turns and twists in ways you couldn't have expected. The only problem I saw in it was Martin's idea to ruin Robb's chances of beating the Lannisters with the help of Renly. Like said before, the plot twists and turns for better, or in Martin's case, almost for the worse, depending on your standing of which House should rule Westeros.
