Dustin Hoffman did an excellent job in his realization of a severely autistic individual, though not being intimately familiar with such cases, I couldn’t attest to the accuracy of the screenplay’s characterization which at times impressed me as overly exaggerated especially during the first half of the film. Cruise seemed a natural for the role of Charlie Babbitt and it was interesting to see how both brothers evidenced personality dysfunction but in quite differing dimensions. I was pleased to see that as the film progressed a deeper sense of self-realization and mutual understanding on behalf of both Charlie and Raymond was developed which gave greater overall substance to the story.
