This is a decent kids' book, and would make for a good read-along for young kids who are learning about World War II and the Holocaust. For such weighty subject matter, though, it's surprisingly light in tone; sure, Annemarie is concerned about her Jewish friend Ellen, and those German soldiers are *so* annoying, but also school, and dolls, and dresses and oh look a kitten. Having read The Giver, I know Lowry has it in her to write weighty, serious kids' fiction; I'm just surprised she treated such a serious subject so... casually(?).
