In the 1880's, ski clubs of Scandinavian immigrants flourished in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Cross country skiing soon gave way to ski jumping, and by 1900, narly every small community had their own jump. In the late 1930's, the rope tow changed the sport; by the 1960's, skiing reached its zenith in Michigan. Inexpensive air travel west caused a decline in popularity and by 1979 half of the industry's ski hills in Michigan had closed.--Container.
