On March 29, 1975, sisters Katherine and Sheila Lyons, age 10 and 12, vanished from a shopping mall in suburban Washington, D.C. As shock spread, then grief, a massive police effort found nothing. The investigation was shelved, and mystery endured. Then, in 2013, a cold case squad detective found something he and a generation of detectives had missed. It pointed them toward a man named Lloyd Welch, then serving time for child molestation in Delaware. As a cub reporter for a Baltimore newspaper, Mark Bowden covered the frantic first weeks of the story. In The Last Stone, he returns to write its ending. Over months of intense questioning and extensive investigation of Welch's sprawling, sinister Appalachian clan, five skilled detectives learned to sift truth from determined lies.

40 years after two school girls disappear from a mall, an investigator dusts off the case and revisits it, with a fresh pair of eyes. The author gives us the the transcripts of the grueling, cat- and -mouse games the team must suffer through to unweave the web of lies of a criminal mind. It is exasperating, soul crushing work as they crack into the world of a demented family. Although there is a bit of repetition, it is a disturbing look at the underbelly of our society that we must acknowledge. If you like true crime, this is for you. It puts me in mind of In Cold Blood with its well fleshed out description.

While waiting for this book, you might want to pick up - What the Dead Know by Laura Lippman. She used the disappearance of the Lyons sisters as the jumping off point for this stand alone novel.

You might want to read Laura Lippman's What the Dead Know. She used the Lyon sisters' disappearance as the jumping-off-point for this book.
