The title "Nuts" refers to the response of Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe to the Germans when they asked him to surrender his troops, the 101st Airborne Division, at the town of Bastogne, during the Battle of the Bulge. Vincent Speranza was a nineteen year old machine gunner who sat in a foxhole on the perimeter around Bastogne.
