Winner of the UK's Richard & Judy Search for a Bestseller Competition, this page-turning debut novel follows an orphan whose late, beloved best friend bequeaths her a treasure hunt that leads her all over Victorian England and finally to the one secret her friend never shared.

It is 1831 when eight-year-old Aurelia Vennaway finds a naked baby girl abandoned in the snow on the grounds of her aristocratic family's magnificent mansion. Her parents are horrified that she has brought a bastard foundling into the house, but Aurelia convinces them to keep the baby, whom she names Amy Snow. Amy is brought up as a second-class citizen, despised by Vennaways, but she and Aurelia are as close as sisters. When Aurelia dies at the age of twenty-three, she leaves Amy ten pounds, and the Vennaways immediately banish Amy from their home.

But Aurelia left her much more. Amy soon receives a packet that contains a rich inheritance and a letter from Aurelia revealing she had kept secrets from Amy, secrets that she wants Amy to know. From the grave she sends Amy on a treasure hunt from one end of England to the other: a treasure hunt that only Amy can follow. Ultimately, a life-changing discovery awaits...if only Amy can unlock the secret. In the end, Amy escapes the Vennaways, finds true love, and learns her dearest friend's secret, a secret that she will protect for the rest of her life.

An abandoned baby, a treasure hunt, a secret. As Amy sets forth on her quest, readers will be swept away by this engrossing gem of a novel--the wonderful debut by newcomer Tracy Rees.

Amy Snow, abandoned naked on a January snowbank, is found and brought home by the young heiress Aurelia Vennaway. Raised by the kitchen staff, Amy is the ever-present sidekick of Aurelia. When Aurelia dies of a heart condition in her early twenties, Amy is turned out of the Vennaway household and sent on a treasure hunt by Aurelia to claim her inheritance. Part Charles Dickens, part Gothic romance, this novel leads the reader through early Victorian England as Amy struggles to solve Aurelia's clues to her mysterious country tour before her death. Rees was very skilled in moving the plot along while staying true to the language and tone of the time period.

What a fantastic book! I really enjoyed spending time with Amy Snow and learning about her life with Aurelia. The scavenger hunt that Amy was put on to find out what the secret could be and why she was being sent to the different places was interesting. I really liked the character of Henry and how much he and Amy got along. Her time in Bath was pretty funny. Tracy Rees does a great job of telling a story that captivates the reader and draws them into the story and into the characters' lives so that you care for them and hope they have happy lives.

This book lacks that teensiest bit of grit that would have given it 3 stars. Great in sense of place and description of Amy's various travels, I wish the development and description could have extended to the main characters. Aurelia is lively, Amy is whiny, Henry is a good man... blah blah. Lots of the more minor characters were more interesting. An unfulfilling reveal (that isn't a reveal at all) ends the story, clean and tidy. Too clean and tidy for me.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Cozy historic mystery and romance rolled into one. Descriptive without being tedious.

Historical fiction, that at first lends itself towards a Jane Austen novel, with twists, turns, secrets, and unexpected strengths of the heroine which make this book enjoyable and hard to put down.

Spring is not yet here, but the song of a solitary, pioneering blackbird when I wake, the smell of something warm and floral on the air in fleeting moments, these signs give me hope.
