Very well-written, directed and acted. Given the subject matter, it could have been sentimental and "heartwarming", or incredibly bleak and depressing, but manages to walk the fine line between them. Strongly recommended.

certain amount of rough language, but watched it with my 10 yr old nephew and he thought it was quite good, understood the story, wasn't put off by the subtitles.

A really superb film - not entirely sure why it is restricted - but the major question is whether a six year old can pull this off - but Vanya is convincing and you empathize with his determination to find his mother- one ponders the true events on which it was based - but it emphasizes the power of passion and determination. Quite uplifting and redeeming - it grips to the end.

Kudos to OPL staff for their choices in international films. This movie is at the top of our list of ones we enjoyed. Fine acting, especially the young hero. The depiction of Russian orphanages was grim and realistic, but with enough optimism to make the film enjoyable.
