"The Emperor of Any Place" is a fascinating and compelling read that is sure to appeal to a wide range of readers whether they're interested in realistic family dramas, WWII historic fiction, or tales of ghosts and adventure.

The book is hard to put down whether you're reading about Evan, the recently orphaned 16 year old who is dealing with his grief and struggling to understand his estranged grandfather; or when you're reading about the Japanese soldier who has been marooned to a mysterious and fantastical island in the Pacific. The question that runs through the novel - of how these two stories connect - has a strange but very captivating conclusion that will definitely leave readers thinking.

This was my first time reading a novel written by Wynne-Jones. I like his easy-to-read writing style. "The Emperor..." is unique, thought-provoking (could this be real?) cleverly crafted to weave back and forth from present day to a war-torn time and kept my interest. Very nice flow chapter to chapter and realistic, moving character relationships through to the end. So many books have a limp, disappointing ending -- this one did not. I am an adult reader.
