After moving to a country town with his mother following his father's death, a young boy befriends a charming, flying, jellyfish-like sprite, only to discover that his schoolmates have similar friends, and that neither they nor the town itself are what they seem to be. Pointedly set in a post-Fukushima world, Murakami's modest-budgeted special effects extravaganza boasts unforgettable creature designs and carries a message of cooperation and hope for all ages.

Weird in a fun way! A little childish, but has some violence so I think age demographic is probably around 10-13 years?

Story details are not well thought out. In the bonus documentary Takashi Murakami even admits when asked about missing details in the story that he had not thought out all of the details and had no idea.

The acting is intentionally bad as Murakami is spoofing the old "UltraMan" TV series that he grew up with.

Some of the creatures will remind you of the old 'Sid & Marty Kroft' kids shows of the 1970's. Considering that they are people in animal costumes, it is no wonder.

This was produced on a shoe-string budget right after Japan's horrible earthquake/tsunami disaster. The movie industry was shut down there and experienced crewmen were looking for work at any salary.

There are redeeming reasons to watch this, but knowledge of Japanese television & folklore will help you enjoy it.

I got this thinking to watch it with my 11 yr old is NOT appropriate for under 13....its contains scenes of violence, suicide, mature subject matter of evil, religion, etc etc.
I did find it interesting as an adult tho
