A pre-DIRTY HARRY film by the great Don Siegel. I greatly enjoyed MADIGAN. Plenty of shots of '68 New York City. Society still intact. No references to race riots, and only the smallest of glances toward the Hippie revolution convulsing the body politic. For Richard Widmark and James Whitmore fans, an absolute must-see. Good stuff from Henry Fonda and Harry Guardino too. An interesting discussion about morality takes place in this film. Fonda, the self-righteous, loner, police commissioner carries on an affair with a beautiful young married socialite, while the street-tough detective on the take, Widmark, scrambles to keep his spoiled wife pleased. Check out the movie. You won't be disappointed.

Don Siegel directed this film of members of the police department, one Richard Widmark playing Madigan, a lowly but hardworking detective and Henry Fonda playing the highest ranked policeman, the Police Commissioner. The two main stars are on parallel tracks and they meet only one time near the end of the film. Right after this fairly good detective film, Siegel would go on to fame by making 5 films with rising star Clint Eastwood, including the masterpieces Dirty Harry and Escape from Alcatraz. Early in his career, Siegel honed his skills making montages for some of the most famous films like Casablanca and They Died with their Boots On.
