In 1760s France, Suzanne is a beautiful young girl with a natural talent for music, enjoying a quietly privileged life. Inexplicably sent off to a convent, she resists structure at every turn until she discovers that she is an illegitimate child. Left with no other option, she pronounces her vows and suffers the consequences of her mother's sin. Still uncertain of her path and oppressed by aggressive and inappropriate Mother Superiors, Suzanne continues to resist imposed religious values.

It is a great movie to watch with stigma of religious beliefs, that brings pain, sufferings to the principal character who is determined to be true to herself and God. Her determination and honesty works at the end.

Released in 2013 and directed by Guillaume Nicloux based on the 18th-century novel "La Religieuse" by French writer Denis Diderot, this 112-minute drama tells the story of a teenaged girl who goes through religious absurdity and unreasonable punishment with a determined fighting spirit.
It is quite interesting to know the unreasonable, if not silly, reality of the 18th-century French society.
Superb is the perfrmance of the protagonist.

Unwilling to consecrate to a covent life, Suzanne rebelled against church abuse in every possible way. A powerful performance and beautifully shot.

based on a 1780 Diderot novel which began as letters written as a practical joke he wanted to play on an ardently Catholic friend and which were later revised into a novel.

despite the 'joke' it does reflect the fate of some young women at the hands of their families and the church.

well played by Etienne, the young girl is subjected to comforting lies, sadistic punishment, and unwanted sexual advances from her church mothers as she makes every effort to renounce her vows and to be released from the suffocatingly cloistered life of the convent.

beautifully filmed French period piece.

Masterly performance by Isabelle Huppert who plays a sexually very confused Mother Superior.
