Add a QuoteOliver: What's Vin like when I'm not around?
Daka: [with Russian accent] He don't like people. People don't like him. Except cat, and you. Why you like him?
Brother Geraghty (to students): what is a saint? What is a saint? Does anybody know what a saint is? I don't think they do. Ooh, Rachel.
Rachel: Individuals who display and act out of exceptional holiness.
Geraghty: ... So, a saint is a human being we celebrate for their commitment and dedication to other human beings, for the sacrifices that they make, for their hard work
in making the world a better place for those around us and for those who will follow them.
Geraghty: ... I do happen to believe that there are saints all around us today. They may never be considered as such by religion, but they are just as important as the ones in your textbooks.
...
Some quotes from IMDb:
Brother Geraghty: We celebrate all the religions of the world in this room, Oliver. I'm a catholic, which is the best of all the religions, really, because we have the most rules. And the best clothes. But among us, there is also a buddhist, agnostic, we have a baptist, and we have an "I don't know", which seems to be the fastest growing religion in the world.
Vincent: You never seen Abbott and Costello?
Oliver: No, sir. Are they old?
Vincent: No. They're dead. That's the oldest you can be.
Oliver: Or the youngest. Time freezes when you're dead.
Vincent: A lady of the night.
Oliver: What's that?
Vincent: It's one of the more honest ways to make a living.

Summary
Add a SummaryVery gritty portrail of a grumpy old man who still brings love and caring to those who need it most. Bill Murray is so natural with the little kid.
Comment
Add a CommentI wasn't sure what to expect, even after watching the trailers, but since I have always liked Bill Murray I figured it was worth a shot and I was not disappointed. This movie brought many emotions out of me and I found it to be an easy watch and really enjoyed the roles played by McCarthy and Watts. Especially the accent by Watts, as thick as Russian you will ever find and she had the persona down too. I won't give any plot lines away but I will say this was well worth the time.
Funny and sweet. I'm not a Bill Murray fan, but he was solid.
perhaps I like it because I'm a curmudgeon and we need more good curmudgeon movies. ;) Heart-warming tale with top quality acting.
The first scene features the Murray character being "serviced" by a part-time prostitute, so I would personally not rate it PG 13, but R. Vincent (Murray) has a filthy mouth, is unkind to almost everyone, especially to the boy, Oliver's mother, played by McCarthy. Eventually in the film we find out why he chooses to be rude, untruthful, unkind, and to behave in ways that are unlawful. The boy and his mother give him a pass; I don't know that I would.
What's really good about the movie, in my opinion, are the actor who plays Oliver. It's his first movie, and I think he's wonderful. Also, McCarthy is calmer and more understated than I've seen her be on SNL where she is coarse and crude. I like this persona much better.
interesting accents, not super deep but cute kind of funny and sarcastic. Emotional at end. a little cliche parts, Reminded me a bit of the crotchety old clint eastwood of gran turino. Melissa mccarthy shines in understated role, chris o'dowd super funny
Very good acting and plot line. Something worth a watch and thought.
One of my favorite movies that I have watched several times, it works because all the characters play their roles to perfection, and we end up loving them all, even Vincent. Imperfect all, just like us, the movie is sweet without becoming saccharine.
Agree, not for young children. Still it's a great movie. Good acting, good lesson on hold your option on face value until you know more about a person. Funny, far fetched, yet entertaining. Bill Murray is brilliant as are all other main characters.
Equally funny and touching, with the subtext of not judging others because we may not know their history or the root causes for their behaviour. Great movie.
Recommended.
