One of the best books I have ever read. So impressed by this author.

In the winter of 1942 a U.S. cargo plane went down triggering a search that caused two more planes to disappear into the frozen waste. This captivating narrative relates the extraordinary lengths the military went to in its efforts to rescue the survivors. The book has an interesting structure: text (in past tense) covers the plight of the survivors attempting to stay warm and stay alive in crazy arctic weather; this is alternated with the (present tense) story of how the author teamed up with the U.S. Coast Guard and a dedicated search crew to try find the bodies of those who did not come back. It's a tense read, even if the very end takes on the hue of a reality show.

Beautifully written and very moving. It's an important story and one I'm glad the author discovered.

I agree with Robbol: The incredible bad luck these survivors faced in the Arctic seems unbelievable - truth is stranger and more ironic than fiction in this case. A testimony to human spirit. Great read!

Hollywood couldn't dream up an 'adventure' story as good as this. Very sobering that, even with the equipment of today, Nature can still have the upper hand.
