As nervy as it is hilarious, a masterpiece from Ernst Lubitsch, To Be Or Not To Be; is a Hollywood film of the boldest black humor, which went into production soon after the U.S. entered World War II. Lubitsch manages to brilliantly balance political satire, romance, slapstick, and urgent wartime suspense in a comic high-wire act that has never been equaled.

I know what your thinking, "Jack Benny is a Five Star Movie?" Not only that he is married in the movie to the lovely Carol Lombard. Now I don't want to make you think I dreamed this up, but Jack Benny plays the Prince of Denmark, Hamlet. He is the great Tura, which he will remind viewers constantly during the movie. The great Ernst Lubitsch directed the movie and selected a great cast from top to bottom. Don't be fooled by the title or the actors in the movie. This is a serious great comedy if there can be such a thing. I guess you will have to watch it for yourself to know whether Jack Benny can convince you when he says "To be or not to be".

Jack Benny, in doublet and tights, reciting Hamlet's soliloquy. What more could you want? He brings everything his audience loved him for from his radio persona to portray "That great, great Polish actor, Josef Tura" (his words, repeatedly). A screwball comedy about the Nazi occupation of Warsaw, what could be wrong? Also featuring the brilliant and gorgeous Carole Lombard (her last film before her tragic death).
