Twelve-year-old Greta's dad wakes her up before dawn and crams her and her siblings into a station wagon. They set off on a journey from New England to California. On the way, Tom assures the kids that Mom will soon join them. Greta believes him at first, older sister Caroline nonchalantly accepts his stories, and nine-year-old Nat is too young to suspect a thing. But Tom's mood shifts often, and the kids soon find themselves in unpleasant and dangerous situations.

This small film from FilmMovement is like a family road movie, but is actually about the effect of a broken marriage on the children. 12-year old Greta is the centre of the story and was well acted by Ryan Simpkins. That's about the only real merit of the film. Otherwise, it played out pretty flat.

Some films you just know are going to be good, and this one was even better than I expected. An unusually honest look at the failures of adulthood. The children were ready, or certainly Greta, the middle child, to know the truth about her own family. Their father and their mother however, were always unable and unwilling to give her the truth, under the excuse of Greta not being ready. The film for me did an amazing job of portraying parents' own repression of the fact that children are not innocent, or atleast not innocent with the subject of divorce. Throughout the film I got the sense that the father was overwhelmingly at fault given his short temper and void of compassion, but then the mother called Greta and they had a short conversation which completely complicates the situation. I'd suggest looking closely into that short conversation.

I really enjoyed this movie that I happened to stumble upon. Moving story about a dysfunctional family. Ryan Simpkins is an amazing young actress.
