Hushpuppy is a six-year-old living in an isolated bayou community. When her father Wink becomes ill, she sets off for the outside world in an attempt to help him. The journey to save her father is delayed by a 'busted' universe that reverses weather patterns and brings about long-extinct animals. Can Hushpuppy save the day?

This is a wonderful film, fantastic, mesmerizing, hope where it feels hopeless, camaraderie in the face of nothing, care, love (if you will, think this term is overused), exterior shells of hardness, but just enough light found, tough, other sets of rules and terms for living, a lot of heart and grit.

I knew nothing about this film except that the actress playing the young protagonist was highly applauded for her performance. It occurs in a section of Louisiana of which most Americans never heard of. The rise of the threatening doom to the people living there is symbolized by some kind of gigantic boars, or they so seemed to the tiny protagonist. The people of this area are in a similar predicament as the Pacific Island nations whose very existence is threatened by America’s refusal to do anything about Climate Change.

Interesting and creative, but not all that entertaining. The cast is wonderful and the imagery beautiful, but the allegory gets lost. I had high hopes for this one, but its magic just gets muddled along with the story. This film shows strong potential from many--cast and crew--but it itself failed to move me.

Proof ! - that high quality sights and sounds can be produced on a low budget. Non-professional actors delivered compelling character portrayals. Fantastic visuals and a spellbinding soundtrack were developed by the filmmakers themselves. It's a work of art that tells an inspiring story.

Awesome movie, seems closer to documentary with Fantasy elements included. Illustrates the hardship of vulnerable people trying to preserve their way of life during changing climate. Great acting from the 2 lead characters, unknowns and local perhaps that helped delivering such emotion. Better than any $250 million movie.

Quvenzhane Wallis is amazing and it's impossible to watch this beautiful fairy tale without Hushpuppy weedling her way into your heart (also impossible to watch this without sobbing hysterically.)

I didn’t care for the fantastical elements of this film. Perhaps the story would have fared better in another format (i.e., a novel).

it took me a while to get into the movie. But at the end I realized it was a fable, even though it espoused USA values; and at the end showed her depths of determination revealed for the first time to the viewer. I think this film will be a cult classic.
Don't be dissuaded by its lyrical pace.

Didn't get what the hype was all about but thankful not to be any of the characters

Wink: My only purpose in life is to teach her how to make it.

Wink: I'm your daddy, and it's my job to take care of you, OK?

Hushpuppy: For the animals that didn't have a dad to put them in a boat, the end of the world already happened.

The Cook: Lemme tell you somethin', when you're a child people tell you that everything's gonna be all hunky-dory and all that bullxxxx, but I'm here to tell you that it's not. So get that out your head right now. Life's some big old feast, yeah, but you? You ain't nothin' but a stupid little waitress. Everything you got on your platter gonna fall on the floor and ain't nobody gonna be there to pick it up for you. Someday it's all gonna be on you.
