Everything looks perfect in Sugar Land, Texas. But it's not. No one knows that better than Forrest "Bear" Wells, a former college football player now serving as a minister in this upscale Texas town. Bear deals daily with emotional and spiritual problems, in both his flock and his own family. But never murder. Not until a man is found facedown on the nearby golf course, his skull crushed. And facets of the investigation keep tangling with his own life. . .

First in a new mystery series with a second book due in 2013. I loved this book and the characters were great. Walker (Bear) Wells is a Texas preacher and former football player who becomes a reluctant detective when the husband of one of his flock is murdered on a golf course. Bear is also so busy with other people's problems he sometimes misses those closer to home. He also has an interesting adversarial relationship with a local detective; their initial meeting is a very "Columbo" moment. Bear narrates this story and I swear I can hear (a young) Andy Griffith in my head ( I know-wrong state) Bear makes some pretty amusing observations.
