Frankie Machianno, a hard-working entrepreneur, passionate lover, part-time surf bum, and full-time dad, is a pillar of his waterfront community--and a retired hit man. Once better known as Frankie Machine, he was a brutally efficient killer. Now someone from his past wants him dead, and after a botched attempt on his life, Frankie sets out to find his potential killers. However, the list of suspects is longer than the California coastline. With the mob on his heels and the cops on his tail, Frankie hatches a plan to protect his family, save his life, and escape the mob forever. Then things get really complicated.

I loved this character Frankie. At first I thought the book would be rather long when I saw how many pages but then as I got into the book and the character, I did not want the book to end. The book left me sad but happy.

We used to walk naked onto Blacks Beach every day with our surfboards always on the look-out for lassies. I'll admit when you're young, naked, tanned and carrying a surfboard you tend to strut just a little bit. This novel came to a climax in Ramona, CA where I have so many fond memories and most of them are even G rated. You must read this novel if you ever did any time in San Diego or just love great story telling about the mafia. Many months later I was urinating on Mark's foot after he got barbed by an eagle ray when we determined to hit a beach with more ladies and less wild life. Imagine my surprise when I learned Blacks Beach is a notorious gay beach and my first aid myth is actually meant for jellyfish stings. So I made a few mistakes in my younger years. Thankfully I'm not a big dork anymore.

I gave up on this novel. Frankie was not an appealing person to me.

It has been a while since my last Winslow novel and I finished this one in a single day as I simply could not put it down. The character Frankie Machine is as unique and mesmerizing as Winslow's Bobby Z.

Don Winslow is one of my favourite crime writers. You can rely on him to deliver some great one liners, entertaining characters, and a fast-paced plot that offers enough twists and turns you can forgive the predictability. If you like your crime with a touch of humour, give him a try. "California Fire and Life" is another one of my favourites of his.
