Senator (and vice presidential candidate) Gore (Democrat, Tennessee) demonstrates that the quality of air, water, and soil is at grave risk, not only locally or regionally but globally, and argues that only a radical rethinking of the human relationship with nature can save the earth's ecology for future generations. This wide-ranging book, published in 1992, demonstrates the author's substantial understanding of and prescience on global climate change, loss of genetic diversity, soil depletion, and other important issues; and demonstrates why he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2007. The book is very readable with diagrams and photographs to illustrate key points. There is a lengthy index but, unfortunately, no bibliography. The latter half of the book was more emotional and political in presentation. Gore concludes by advocating a new Global Marshall Plan with five strategic goals (p. 305-7).

"... we have assumed that our lives need have no real connection to the natural world ... Precisely because we feel no connection to the physical world, we trivialize the consequences of our actions. And because this linkage seems abstract, we are slow to understand what it means to destroy those parts of the environment that are crucial to our survival. We are, in effect, bulldozing the Gardens of Eden." [p. 144]
