I dunno about the criticisms. I'm not a movie buff and am not familiar with all the directors or the similarities to other movies such as REVENGE.
I watched it because I enjoyed reading McCarthy's novels, including this one. I actually gained some insights into the novel, as McCarthy's kind of cryptic in some of his writings. Maybe you have to hit me over the head with a hammer to get my attention and understanding, but this isn't the first movie made from McCarthy's novels that I've gained insight and understanding.
I was entertained, but I thought Penelope Cruz was unconvincing in her characterization. I don't know about "this usually very reliable acting pair," but I didn't get any sense of chemistry between them, either.

A good western directed by B.B.Thornton starring Mat Damon. A good western with a literate script from a novel by Cormac McCarthy.

Skip It - All the Pretty Horses (2000) 116 min. Groan. Billy Bob Thorton directs Matt Damon and Penelope Cruz in one of the dullest westerns ever made. The scenery is the only redeeming quality of this film. Slow as molasses and not worth the time and effort to watch.

This very well may be an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel, but it's also a dead-ringer rip-off of the film REVENGE (1990), starring Kevin Costner, with Anthony Quinn and Madeleine Stowe, and directed by Tony Scott (Costner had wanted to direct it himself). And frankly, ALL THE PRETTY HORSES director Billy Bob Thornton, is no Tony Scott, which might explain why stars Matt Damon and Penelope Cruz, are so dramatically flat in this picture. Thornton's direction is all over the place, and he fails to get a rise out of this usually very reliable acting pair - and their accompanying cast - thus, failing the film and ultimately the viewers. There's some wonderful cinematography but other than that, it's a rather boring end result of what could have been a great tribute to the modern Western movie. See Costner's flic REVENGE (you may have to rent it elsewhere - or ask OPL for an Inter-Library transfer - 'cause OPL doesn't have it!), instead. It's the better version!
