I probably say this about whichever Kate Shugak book I'm currently reading, but this was my favourite. Breakup was more playful, and yes, less focused on the cases to solve but more (satisfyingly) focused on people's lives and the dynamics of relationships of all kinds. (And such a relief to relax into a Kate Shugak book after the Harlequinromancy I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh and the outright icky The Feather Thief by Kirk Johnson.) The Kate Shugak series reminds me fondly of Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon series -- check that out if you haven't already.

This fairly early entry in the Kate Shugak series gives lots of important background on the major characters. Somehow, I'd missed this one. While Publishers' Weekly wasn't impressed, I was. Kate isn't yet totally aware of her powers, but that's part of the charm of this book. Another is its sheer hilarity, not to say slapstick--I found myself rocking with laughter in places. In others, not so much, as Kate, Jim, and Dan find themselves frustrated as they solve two linked murders.

True, this is less a mystery than most of the Kate Shugak series books, but it is VERY entertaining. Stabenow seems bent on proving Murphy's law,
