A team of six archaeologists from the United States, England, and Scotland assembles at the beginning of the Arctic summer to unearth traces of the lost Viking settlements in Greenland. But as they sink into uneasy domesticity, there is news of an epidemic back home, and their communications with the outside world fall away. Facing a Greenland winter for which they are hopelessly ill-equipped, Nina, Ruth, Catriona, Jim, Ben, and Yianni, knowing that their missives may never reach their loved ones, write final letters home. These letters make up the narrative of Cold Earth , with each section of the book composed of one character's first-person perspective in letter form.
In this exceptional and haunting debut novel, Moss weaves a rich tapestry of personal narrative, history, love, grief, and naked survival. Cold Earth is both a heart-pounding thriller and a highly sophisticated novel of ideas.

atmospheric, well maintained tension, this had much of the essential features for suspense. It wasn't the most evenly crafted story, but having kept at it until the end, it is true to its genre.

Moss is obviously knowledgeable about the north and had a good idea for a book, but she did not pull it off. Six archeologists on the western coast of Greenland while an epidemic spreads in the US and Europe have lost contact with the outside world. Although there are six people, the perspective of only two of the women is presented. Although a long chapter is devoted to a third member, his voice is never heard - this section slips into a description of events. The other three are not developed at all. It is a type of ghost story that ends abruptly and without explanation. It is as if Moss did not know how to deal with her good setting and idea.

At times I found it very disturbing and almost didn't want to continue. Extremely suspenseful.

I'm usually not scared by literature, but for some reason I had a hard time reading this one at night before bed, haha...That being said, I really thoroughly enjoyed it. Great read!

A group of archaeologists and hangers on go on a two week dig in Greenland. While there, personalities clash and one member starts seeing ghosts of ancient Greenlanders. Meanwhile back in the world an epidemic rages. News is sparse. Is anyone back home still alive? When the return plane does not show up the group prepares for the end. Told in a series of letters to loved ones this is a taut suspense that really grabs you. Keep a blanket handy, you can feel the cold seeping into your bones.
