Cute, light, entertaining. A different environment for mysteries.

'The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency' follows the adventures of the gentle, compassionate and 'traditionally built' Mma Ramotswe as she starts a detective agency equipped only with a modest inheritance from her father and robust common sense. In her quest to become the foremost detective in Botswana, she pits her wits against unfaithful husbands, idle fathers, insurance fraudsters, fake doctors and dangerous child kidnappers. This is a charming television mini-series with delightful characters, light humor and a hint of danger.

Note: One copy of this series will not allow you to watch the conclusion of the episode "The Bone." You cannot back out of it and go to the scene index to get to the conculsion. You will have to either read the book or get another copy.

nice scenery, good plots.
a slower paced detective series that was worth my time.

Well done, I really enjoy the episodes. Acting was great, brought the likeable characters to life. Wish they had made more.

We just loved this! I've read all the books and my husband hasn't read any, but he was just a taken with it as I was. Of course, they added and changed some things from the books, but they kept a surprising amount, and I wasn't unhappy with the changes. I was only so sorry that it ended so soon, leaving loose ends to the story. At least I was able to fill my husband in! It was a real treat to enjoy this after enjoying the books so much. It was icing on the cake!

This is not quite the same as the books. Nevertheless, it is just as charming. We own ALL the #1 Ladies' Dectective books McCall-Smith has written and buy new ones as they are published; the film captures their spirit very well. Botswana is an African country full of Africans (duh!), proud of their lives and traditions and governed very well indeed. The series makes us want to go there and celebrate instead of calling for U.N. aid, international sanctions and the World Court at the Hague. That's an accomplishment. Finally, finally here's a taste of idigenous Africans who are portrayed as likeable people, African Africans who are neither heros nor particular villains. This stands beside Bela Fleck's "Throw Down Your Heart." At last word, the second series or film was in process using locations in South Africa, which apparently won the tax-relief bidding war for the film-maker's presence.

This show had some quirky characters and some interesting plotlines. However, there just wasn't enough going on for my taste. Seems to take the detective genre and make Murder She Wrote look action packed and serious. Just not my kind of show, but was nice to look at and well acted. I'd call it "cute".

Top rated!! What a gem this DVD is. I was shocked to learn that there isn't a 2nd season. How can I persuade HBO to continue the series.

# 1 fan of the NO 1 Ladies Detective Agency!
