Gene Todd lives on a small farm with his grandparents and his uncle. Gene works hard on the farm. He milks the cows, helps his grandma in the garden, and rakes hay during haying season. He loves his family, but he is lonely for a friend. One day, after a terrible storm, Gene finds a green heron chick in a nest that fell from a tree. He is determined to raise the chick, so he takes it home. He names the small bird Herman. Finally, Gene has found a friend, but can he keep the young chick alive? And if he does, what will happen when Herman is grown and it's time for him to fly away?
