E:Part of me wishes that I could forget you too. Forget meeting you, finding out what you are and everything that has happened.
S: If that's what you want..
E: Yes, it is. Because I don't want it to be like this. I don't want to feel like this. But I can't, with everything that has happened I can't loose the way I feel about you.

I only (re)read this to see if Elena was blond (she is) and if I read the first book or the first volume containing the first and the second book (I read the first volume). A little more than halfway through (after skipping to the end to check if I read the first volume or not) I couldn't stand the writing style and the characters anymore and quit reading.

I am a huge fan of the show. I decided to start reading this series, after another planned middle season finale.

It makes me wonder how a book is adapted, and how some characters didn't translate into the show such as Meredith.

It was also difficult to read, as the book cover illustrate the actor's from the show, but Elena is described as having blond hair and blue eyes in this book.

I appreciated the story line, and it makes more sense that Stefan, Damon, and Katherine lived during the Italian Renaissance. The brother's death is much more traumatic and gives the reader to how much anger/hate they have towards each other due to their shared love of Katherine. The book was a good read, and I kept reading to find out what happens in the sequel. The book increased my curiosity to continue reading this series.

While I'm not entirely certain I've forgiven the author for making such utterly shallow and somewhat materialistic characters, I have to admit, I really loved the story and it kept me glued to the book.

Very Disappointing this writer left alot to the be desired in the story it went so quickly and if felt as if everything was left half explained I am on book two now I hope it will be better.

I don't get why people are obsessed with this series. The plot's okay but it's just SO unoriginal. The only reason I read it was because my cousin made me watch the TV series, which wasn't too bad, so I wanted to see the source of inspiration for that.

Big mistake. It was a huge cliched mess totally different from the series. Typical romance/fantasy plotline: Pretty Girl Meets Handsome Boy, Girl Likes Boy, Boy is Hiding Something, Girl Finds it Out, Girl Gets Together With Boy, Happy Ending with some Loose Ends which then Gets Amplified into a Sequel.

I don't know; maybe it's just me but I thought today's readers weren't going to fall for that complete predictability.

However, it wasn't all bad. L.J. Smith has a beautiful way of writing and I think that if she chose a better, different genre then she'd be one of my favourite authours. Also, it didn't stick to the status quo every single paragraph. Even though it was ultimately predictable, there were still some twists and turns in there that I think should get some appreciation.

So here's to Ms. Smith for making me still keep on reading even though I hated the storyline!

The first book introduces the reader to Elena Gilbert, a beautiful and popular high school student in the small town of Fells Church, Virginia and her friends Bonnie McCullough, Meredith Sulez, Matt Honeycutt, and Caroline Forbes. Caroline is Elena's old friend and is now her competition. Elena breaks up with her boyfriend, first love and best friend, Matt, who is a football star and quarterback on the high school football team, when school starts. Matt and Elena were described to be the golden couple; he was tall, athletic, blond and popular, but she felt that there were no sparks or intensity in their relationship, and she felt as if she was always yearning for something more. As their senior year begins, Elena fatefully meets a new foreign student from Italy, Stefan Salvatore, whom she is instantly, indescribably and undeniably drawn to. What Elena doesn't know is Stefan's deepest, darkest centuries old secret; Stefan is a centuries old vampire. .
