Roger Ebert's "Worst Movie of 1986"

What an awful movie. Reading the production notes, you see that a lot of,dedication and effort went into it. Pity the results were so meager!

Sometimes I think the obvious( that one might feel adrift in the film reality of Dune, ) is the point. There's a kind of symphonic ( stay with me ) structure to the whole thing that craps out in the finale. Mesmerizing and soul killing at the same time. Loved the Guild Masters and any movie with Jose Ferrer talking to to Guild Masters....., well.

This was a tough movie to watch. The plot was convoluted and the movie had many weird characters and parts to it. There was a strange boiled- face floating man, too many psychics to count, a weird little girl with a strange voice, and a planet full of odd blue-eyed people. The special effects especially when the characters were riding the worms were terrible. This is a movie that I was ready to give up on and wish that I had. My advice is that if you are considering watching this movie, please don't.

The best thing about "Dune"? It's a David Lynch film. The worst thing about "Dune"? It's a David Lynch film. It's the only film in his canon in which there is very little of his personal stamp, and he has called it his only failure. The movie is a mess. They may have been going for a sci-fi fantasy in the mode of "Star Wars," but it feels like an expensive Roger Corman production. There are some cool visuals and many Lynch regulars (Also, Sting!), but also an incoherent story line, a Toto soundtrack, and giant worms. The documentary "Jordowosky's Dune" about an earlier attempt to film Frank Herbert's cult novel by madman director Alejandro Jordorowsky is worth watching. There's soon to be a new version from the director of the last "Blade Runner."

For the most part pretty terrible acting. The story is highly fragmented and doesn't really hang together unless you have read the book. Even then there's been enough changes in the movie version that it really, really doesn't hang together and the changes are adding insult to injury. It's not even like the special effects are all that great. This is the kind of story that's just asking for a three movie remake along the lines of The Hobbit, and like The Hobbit you don't mention the a first movie version ever existed. I guess the only good things I can say are there are a few actors who somehow emerged unscathed and went on to become famous in other ventures (e.g., Patrick Stewart). You can also add this to the list of steampunk movies in terms of set and prop design, but it's not worth watching for that.

This movie isn't entirely successful- even at the time of it's release some of it was henky, and now some of the effects have aged horribly. However, there are parts of the film that DO work- very well, and this is what it makes it worth watching. The film is a different beast from the book by Frank Herbert ( which you should read ), and is superior to the lukewarm TV series.

A hot mess of a film. Too long & too surreal for when I watch as a kid.

LibraryLoungeLizard - read the book and the movie makes a LOT more sense... The movie did NOT do the book justice

Did not enjoy this movie at all, but truly LOVE sci-fi and we are such BIG sci-fi fans, so maybe should give this a 2nd chance? The story was confusing, laughable special effects even for 80's standards, some pizza face dude flying around, and long and boring. The wife and I fell asleep.

It is that will alone that I set my mind in motion. It is by the juice of sapho thoughts acquire speed, the lips acquire stains, the stains become a warning. It is by will alone that I set my mind in motion.
