In 1967, Detroit police, security guards, and national guardsmen responded to reports of a sniper at a slightly disreputable hotel called the Algiers. By the end of the night, 3 black teenagers were dead and 9 other hotel occupants were badly beaten. No one was convicted. Writer John Hersey, best known for "Hiroshima," puts together a collage of the events, drawing from interviews, court records, newspaper reports, and other sources. He doesn't make much of an effort to organize all the information and it could use a little more context, but it's a vital book about a shocking event that anyone who cares about race relations in this country should read. The recent film "Detroit" is based on the same events.
