I really like the Kate Shugak mysteries and this one is no disappointment. Kate goes undercover to find out who is dealing drugs on a pipeline construction crew. Although she does little but asking a few questions, she ends up getting trapped by the dealers. There is only one plot line here and that is unusual for Ms. Stabenow - there are usually 2 or 3 mysteries happening at the same time. Nevertheless, this was very enjoyable. Ms. Stabenow continues to improve with every book.

This fairly early Kate Shugac mystery has, for Stabenow, a rather straightforward plot. It's still complicated enough to keep readers guessing, however. Jack recommends her for a job with a petroleum company on the North Slope, and, intrigued by the job and the fact that she couldn't otherwise afford to go there, she agrees, for a price. She's asked to find the sellers of the drugs that seem ubiquitous in the camps, in spite of what the owners think is tight security. Her cover gets blown early on, and her life is in danger. Of course she solves the case, and some other side cases as well. Along the way we learn, as we always do with Stabenow, interesting tidbits about life in Alaska, and Native American ways. Her characters grow over time, but most of the major ones are here this early in the series--Kate, Jack, Jim, Johnnie, Ekaterina, Kate's cousins Martin and Alexia--to say nothing of the incomparable Mutt. The majestic and dangerous Alaskan scenery is a major character in its own right.
