This fairly early entry in the Kate Shugak series gives lots of important background on the major characters. Somehow, I'd missed this one. While Publishers' Weekly wasn't impressed, I was. Kate isn't yet totally aware of her powers, but that's part of the charm of this book. Another is its sheer hilarity, not to say slapstick--I found myself rocking with laughter in places. In others, not so much, as Kate, Jim, and Dan find themselves frustrated as they solve two linked murders.

True, this is less a mystery than most of the Kate Shugak series books, but it is VERY entertaining. Stabenow seems bent on proving Murphy's law,
